Tests & Results

When you are unwell the doctor may ask you to have further tests. Most commonly these tests will look at your blood and urine. Other tests may also be carried out and your doctor or nurse will discuss these with you. If you are on certain medications or have a chronic illness you may also be required to have regular tests.

BLOOD TESTS

Can I get a blood test done at the practice?

We only offer blood tests to our elderly or disabled patients. Normally you will need to attend the hospital for your blood test.

What is my blood type?

This is not an NHS test and cannot be requested as part of any other tests a doctor or nurse may authorise. The only way this information will be held in your medical records is if you have been pregnant or you have donated blood. Otherwise you will need to make arrangements to have your blood tested at a private clinic.

URINE TESTS

Your doctor or nurse will give you a bottle and a form for your urine sample. The bottle must have your name, date of birth, date and time the sample was taken written on it and should be put in the plastic bag provided together with the form when you hand it to the Receptionist.

NB. FAILURE TO ENTER THE INFORMATION ON THE BOTTLE OR OMISSION OF THE FORM WILL RESULT IN THE LABATORY REJECTING
THE SAMPLE ALTOGETHER.

RESULTS

How do I get my results?

You are responsible for contacting the Practice by telephone or coming into the Surgery in person for your test results. Our Receptionists are not clinically trained and are only therefore able to give you the doctor’s comments on your results once he/she has reviewed them. The comment will indicate if your results are “Normal – no action” or the doctor may want to speak to you about your result usually on the telephone.

When can I call for my results?

Your results will usually be processed within 7 – 10 working days following the date the test was done. We ask that you contact us between 11.00 – 13.00 and 15.00 – 18.00 to avoid peak times when patients tend to be calling to make an appointment.

Why do I have to wait 7 – 10 working days?

There are a number of factors involved in processing results; some results take longer than others to be processed by the laboratory: multiple test results may come back at different times and it is best for you receive them all the same time; the results are reviewed and commented on by the
doctor who requested the tests for continuity of care: or some blood results are not returned to us electronically and we may have to wait for a hospital letter. The 7 – 10 day period makes allowances for any of these situations.

I’m worried and I don’t want to wait 7 – 10 days.

We know that waiting for results can cause anxiety but please rest assured that urgent results are telephoned through and/or faxed to us at the Surgery to ensure that we can act on these immediately and contact you.

I am attending an outpatient’s appointment; can I get my results sooner?

Please ask your hospital to email or fax us a request for information.
